Moles and raised lesions are formed through an over growth of keratinocytes (skin cells) of the upper layers of the skin. Moles are typically pigmented, meaning they are darker than the surrounding skin,

Typically, benign moles will appear during the first 25 years of an individual’s life. It is not uncommon to have multiple moles or raised lesions.

Prior to seeking cosmetic treatment for any mole or raised lesion, it it important to perform a self assessment using the ABCDE Method (see image). Speak to your doctor about moles that appear after age 25 or if you notice changes in a mole's color, height, size, or shape.

When to Consider Treatment

  • Your mole or raised lesion affects your confidence or self-esteem

  • You avoid wearing certain clothing items due to discomfort caused by friction or pinching of your mole or lesion

  • You simply don’t like your mole and would like to have it removed

Recommended Treatment Options

THE ABCDE Method of self assessment should be used to identify if moles or raised lesions are of concern. If your mole or raised lesion has any of the identifiers of a malignant growth, you should see your family doctor for further assessment.
