Skin hyperpigmentation occurs when skin cells are damaged by inflammation or UVA/UVB or HEV Rays. This trauma causes the melanocyte (the part of your skin cell that produces melanin/pigment) to increase the production of pigment to a specific area. This causes freckles, sun spots, and darkening of the skin.

Typically the best way to prevent sun damage is to wear an SPF 30 or higher daily and reapply as directed. In addition, sun hats and UV blocking clothing can be worn if you plan on being outdoors for prolonged periods of time.

Laser treatments, such as IPL, can be used to correct any surface hyperpigmentation caused by inflammation or sun damage. Medical grade skincare in addition to a high quality SPF can be used to reduce future damage.

If the area of hyperpigmentation is textured or raised, it could be seborrheic keratosis, a common skin condition caused by a build up of skin cells. In this case we use a radio frequency based treatment called the Lamprobe to treat the concern.
