The anatomy of a wrinkle

Do you see your wrinkles as marks of shutterstock_18821584experience or signs of aging? Regardless of the prestige carried by a wrinkle, most people would rather not have any at all. While Nu Image doesn’t have a magic eraser that makes wrinkles vanish right before your eyes, we can help you look your natural best at any age.

The aging process starts deep within your skin decades before wrinkles actually make an appearance. As time marches on skin gets thinner and drier, and loses elasticity. Age causes the surface epidermal cells to get thinner, and skin doesn’t retain moisture the way it used to. Oil glands slow down, and elastin and collagen break down, and skin loses its supportive structure. Wrinkles and sagging become more noticeable.  In the skin’s lower layer fat cells shrink, and they can’t plump up the upper layers of the skin quite like they used to.

What causes wrinkles?

Too much sun

While skin ages all over the body it’s more pronounced in areas exposed to the sun like the face, neck, forearms and back of the hands. Sun damage produces dry and sagging skin, wrinkles and skin growths known as liver spots.  UV rays damage collagen and elastin.

The more you use your facial muscles, the more creased they become. In time wrinkles form and they are almost impossible to smooth out without intervention. Think about it. Eyes, lips and the forehead are often the first wrinkle culprits.

Skin colour

People with lighter skin have less natural defense against damaging UV light, while those with dark skin usually wrinkle later in life.

Genetics

Yes, your DNA dictates how wrinkly your skin will get. If your mom looked great at 60, it’s likely that you will too as long as you’re not soaking up the sun.
